Supply Lists for Every Family & Household

The Basics:

  • 5-day water supply (at least 1 gallon per person/per day)
  • 5-day supply of non-perishable foods (dried fruit, canned fish, peanut butter, protein bars, etc.)
  • Manual can opener ; “Mess kits”… (and/or paper plates, cups, utensils)
  • Paper towels, wet wipes
  • At least a 2-week supply of prescription meds (plus lists of medicine names, doses, pharmacy & doctor – names & numbers)
  • First aid kit; Non-prescription meds (pain relievers, anti-diarrhea, antacids, etc.)
  • Flashlights, lanterns, & cooling/heating “gadgets” (crank- or solar-powered, and/or with extra batteries)
  • Battery-powered, solar, or hand-crank radio
  • SOS light and/or whistle to signal for help
  • Local maps; Written family & emergency contact info
  • Cell phone with charger and extra battery (plus power bank, solar and/or car chargers)
  • Extra set of house keys, car keys, etc.
  • Change of clothes and sturdy shoes (for each household member)
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hand sanitizer
  • Toiletries, small/medium towel and/or washcloth (plus carrying case/bags – for keeps and for waste)
  • Copies of important documents (medical records, ID cards, insurance policies, utility & bank statements)
  • Duct tape, fix-a-flat, zip ties, multi-tool, toolkit, headlamp, batter-powered work lights, etc.
  • Cleaning supplies (plastic bags, disinfectant, masks, gloves, etc.)
  • CASH (Think: Power Outage)

For Households With Children:

  • Books, games, puzzles, & other fun things to do (Think: Power Outage…)
  • Favorite stuffed animal or blanket
  • Activity and/or coloring books (pencils/markers/crayons)
  • Identification for each child to carry with them (…in case you are separated from each other)
  • Kid-friendly, nonperishable snacks
  • Wet wipes, cleaning supplies
  • Sunscreen, bug spray
  • “Weather Gear” (poncho, rain boots, snow boots, warm jacket, cool rags, etc.)
  • A “Kid-Kit” (backpack w/supplies for each child)

For Households with Babies, Toddlers:

  • Well-stocked diaper bag (packs of diapers, packs of baby wipes, diaper cream, baby powder, baby wash & lotion, sealable plastic bags for dirty diapers)
  • Bottles / Sippy cups / Disposable cups
  • Ready-to-feed infant formula in single serving cans or bottles (for formula-fed infants)
  • Pacifiers; Teething tablets or gel
  • Infant pain reliever with Acetaminophen
  • Bulb syringe
  • Burp rags or smaller blanket
  • 1-2 boxes of nursing pads (note: reusable pads will require laundry)
  • Toddler snacks
  • Extra clothes; Sturdy shoes (toddlers)
  • Extra (emergency) blanket(s)
  • Receiving blanket(s)
  • Thermos (to keep formula cool / warm longer)
  • Small camping stove for boiling / sanitizing water

For Households with Special Healthcare Needs:

  • A current copy of Care Plan(s)
  • Current medical information and records, with doctor & pharmacy contacts (Suggestion: Carry both an electronic copy – on CD, flash drive, or phone app, and a paper copy in waterproof bag)
  • Special dietary foods and supplements (5-day supply)
  • Two-week supply of all prescription meds (consult doctor on recommended amounts to keep in kit)
  • Two-week supply of medical care items, such as needles, nasal cannulas, bandages, etc.
  • Cooler and chemical ice packs for keeping medicines cold (*Ask your doctor or pharmacist how long each medicine can last & about storage needs)
  • Medical alert bracelet(s) or necklace(s)
  • Copy of all prescription info, and phone numbers for out-of-town pharmacies (*Talk with your doctor about how to get emergency meds/supplies – at clinics or hospitals, and how to plan for possible stoppages due to disaster)
  • Identification for each family member to carry (in case of separation)
  • Comfort items (such as toys that calm or entertain, or a photo album to flip through, familiar clothing or blanket, etc.)
  • Necessary/Extra chargers & adapters (for example, AC adaptor for car to charge small equipment such as nebulizer); Non-electrical alternatives where possible (such as manual wheelchair); Back-up power and Battery-powered versions of equipment (Extra batteries for medical equipment, hearing aids and other devices; Power banks, jump kit w/USB port, solar and/or hand crank chargers; If possible, generator that is sized to suit your needs – Safely)

For Households with Pets:

  • Veterinary records (vaccinations, medical summary, prescriptions for medications)
  • 2-weeks’ worth of any needed medications or related care supplies (with “how to” instructions for other caregivers, veterinarians)
  • Feeding instructions for each pet
  • 1-month supply of flea, tick, & heartworm prevention
  • Registration information (ex: proof of ownership or adoption records – if possible, with physical description of pet, such as breed, weight, etc.)
  • Recent photographs of each of your pets
  • List of urgent care pet hospitals and veterinarians in areas you may be traveling to
  • Microchip info, if applicable (ex: microchip number, name & number of microchip company)
  • Your contact info (phone numbers, addresses for family & friends you may stay with)
  • Waterproof carrier/container for documents
  • 2-week supply of food for each pet (stored in waterproof containers)
  • 2-week supply of water for each animal (daily intake Xs14)
  • (non-spill) Food and water dishes; Manual can opener
  • Leash, harness, collar with ID, pet carriers, etc.
  • Toys, bedding, blankets, towels
  • Pet first aid book and first aid kit
  • Cleaning supplies (paper towels, plastic bags, disinfectant)
